Let your mind wander for a while. Don’t censor your thoughts but simply think of a lovely destination that you have, at some point dreamed of visiting. Think of the holiday hotel that you would be pampered in. Think of the food, the wine, the relaxation that you absorb yourself in at such a place.
You may be thinking of a holiday beach hotel or a place in the mountains. We all have our own wishes and dreams. Here in North America we have a “live to work” culture. Not thinking about the efficacy of that way of life for a moment but just considering some ways to bring both physical, mental and emotional relaxation into our lives, let’s talk about some pampering that we can partake in at holiday hotels.
Let’s explore three different hypothetical scenarios that we could indulge in. The goal here is not to plan a trip for you but to simply pique your interest and stimulate your thinking as to what is out there in the great big world.
First is a popular destination for many…Hawaii. Kauai in particular is a lovely, less busy island that has a perfect blend of beach, sun, activities and a little more peace and quiet than the busier destinations such as Honolulu. Only about 20 minutes, by plane, from Honolulu, Kauai offers lush tropical locations such as the beach where the famous “From Here to Eternity” love scene was filmed. Waimea Canyon, described by Mark Twain as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” is a wonderful natural location for walking and hiking. Kauai has all the beauty one expects in Hawaii but with much less busyness.

Second let’s think about Cambodia’s Angkor. This ancient empire built by Kings between the 9th and 13th centuries has enduring appeal for local Khmer’s and travelers alike. Stimulate your mind and soul while visiting the temples and the beautiful Siem reap City with its rivers and floating villages. Experience the grace and hospitality of the locals as they proudly display their ancient and contemporary culture to all who have eyes to see.
Finally, let’s imagine a holiday resort hotel in the Lakes District in northern Italy. Visit Lake Como, Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore and experience all the sensual food and intoxicating flavors this regions offers the traveler. The “pre-alp” valleys and sparkling lakes and charming villages will take your breath away. Here you will have the choice of 4 and 5 star hotels, or unique and charming “agriturismos” where you can enjoy the warmth and hospitality of real, working Italian farms.
Again, let your mind go and imagine the culture, beautiful locations and lovely, nurturing holiday hotels that you can recharge your batteries in. Chances are, if you go just once…you’ll keep going back.
