Majorca Holidays – A Little Mediterranean Paradise

Majorca (best pronounced “Mah-york-ah”) is Spain’s largest island. Although it is not a name you commonly hear when researching travel options, this island has received an ever increasing number of visitors from the 1960’s through today.  In 2008 over 24 million passengers came and went primarily through the main airport (Palma de Mallorca) but also some arriving by sea. The island has a little of everything – beaches, resorts, nightlife and a rich historical tradition.

During your holiday in Majorca you will soak up a Mediterranean climate- mild winters and hot summers. Palma, the capital populated by almost 400,000, is the cultural hub and entry point to the island. This is where you will enjoy the liveliest entertainment and nightlife on this island. Also you will find the best choice of hotels, food and culture.

Outside of the city, Majorca has much to offer in the way of beaches, luxury resorts, golf, horseback riding, hiking, etc. You may even be able to book a cottage holiday. It is a wonderful destination for families, proven by the millions of European families that vacation there on an annual basis. For the younger ones, there are water parks to cool you down during the hot summers, karting and mini golf.

For seaside times of relaxation and sun, beaches such as “Magalluf Beach” and neighboring “Palma Nova” can fulfill that desire to soak up the Mediterranean sun and surf. This region, on the southwest coast of the island is only about 15km from Palma and the airport. As well as sunbathing, here you will find many resorts and activities such as glass bottomed boats, watersports, shopping, bars and restaurants. Interestingly this region has a growing number of British style pubs, due to the large number of British who take their holidays in Majorca.

For a definite change of pace, visit the Coves del Drac (Dragon Caves). This lies on the East side of Majorca. This is a very popular tourist attraction where you will see stalactites and experience a tour that ends at subterranean Lake Martel. Here you will enjoy some live classical music in the wonderful acoustics of the cave environment. Of course you have a chance to buy food and souvenirs as well.

Whether you want your Majorca holiday to be at a lively beach and resort community, hiking the Majorcan countryside, enjoying the live music and lights at a subterranean lake or discovering local traditions and food, such as local produce and meats, you will certainly find many travel gems in the lovely Spanish island of Majorca.
